Tramp Art is a truely international art form. It might have originated in continental europe, e.g. northern germany and denmark and later this art form blossomed in the United States of America. There is a wide variety of styles. Tramp art objects, like tramp art boxes, tramp art frames, even tramp art wardrobes were made in Germany from 1870 to the 1930s. Often the younger generation made tramp art boxes to be given as a present to their loved ones. There is reason to believe that wandering apprentices popularized this art form while traveling through europe. Especially during the WWI a lot of tramp art was produced by soldiers waiting in the trenches, chip-carving away their anxiety and thinking of their loved ones at home ( or in some cases the children at home chip carving for their fathers in the trenches ).Tramp Art was quite popular at the time, it was easy to produce, the wood of cigar boxes was available in abundance and it made inexpensive gifts. There is no real name for it nowadays in german, "Kantkerbschnitt" would be a suitable expression, but you still have to explain what it is, it more or less describes the technical aspect of Tramp Art, but it is not a coined expression like its american equivalent with its romantic connotation. Nowadays very few tramp art boxes have survived in Germany, there are only a few devoted collectors. Although it is quite unlikely, in some cases I am not alltogether sure, whether some objects found over here were not actually made in the USA. The design is so unusual and adopts more or less american styles. I assume the influence worked in both directions.
